In the hopeless hellscape of , a year-old matchmaking event survives in a village in the west of Ireland. Lisdoonvarna is home to approximately people, but in September the village expands by over times as 80, people attend the five-week long Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival. It attracts singletons between 18 and 80 years old from all over Ireland and a contingency from elsewhere. Every day of the month, from 11AM to 2AM, 15 venues across the one-street town offer dancing — predominantly jive, set-dancing and whatever you do to wedding-pop.
In the age of dating apps , ” girlfriend experiences ” and Ashley Madison , the event seems an extraordinary anachronism. Lisdoonvarna now bills itself as both a matchmaking and a country-western music event. In recent years, jive dancing has had a notable resurgence among young people in rural Ireland, but show bands and country music have long been a part of the festival because that kind of music lends itself to the set dancing. The dancing — I am told over and again — and the craic are what bring the thousands of people and facilitate the romance.
Lisdoonvarna is a time warp.

Why do people think Lisdoonvarna is a good idea?
By now most red-blooded Irishman and women have heard of the ever famous Willi Daly and his daughters who have taken on the task of matchmaking in Lisdoonvarna. But what else is there besides love and dancing in Lisdoon says you? A lot says I.
Vantastivalvenuepx The Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival is one of Ireland’s oldest traditional festival takes place in the small Co. Clare town.
I recommend Lisdoonvarna as one of the most famous matchmaking festivals in Ireland in my book — as one means to meet an eligible farmer! Despite the popularity of online dating sites, the popularity of the matchmaker still holds strong and of course, the fact that Lisdoonvarna is a world famous festival adds to the fun too. Is it really that successful as a matchmaking festival though? You bet it is. Couples that met at Lisdoonvarna ten, twenty, thirty and forty years ago still return to the festival to meet up with old friends, relive those bygone days and just to enjoy the craic and the dancing.
Coincidentally, when telling a man about my book last summer, he told me that he had met his girlfriend there the previous year. He had planned to go down for the craic with two friends. The two of them changed their minds, claiming that farm jobs had become important. Nerves was probably the reason. He went ahead, went into a pub planning to have a drink in each of the seven pubs on the street but met a lovely lady in the first pub and stayed there for the evening.
See — it does work. So I asked those at the Hydro Hotel for their advice for people in that situation.
World’s first LGBT matchmaking festival to hit Lisdoonvarna

The event has grown to attract not only singles, but people from all around the world who are looking for a bit of fun during September. For the first time ever, gays and lesbians will have their own weekend dedicated to matchmaking during the festival.
It is going to be same as any other matchmaking weekend — we will have entertainment, music and dancing — but this will be a gay and lesbian weekend. Ireland is leading the world on gay issues and hopefully we will have gay marriage soon, so the time is right for something like this to take place. Related: LGBT.
Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking festival, which has been on the go for over one hundred years, is set to host singletons from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual LGBT community for a weekend of fun and frolics. The Outing, which runs from Friday to Sunday, will mark the opening weekend of the month-long festival which traditionally sees thousands of single men and women descend on the small town of just over people in search of love.
The event is being organised by the Hydro Hotel owner Marcus White, former editor of Free magazine Eddie McGuinness and Donal Mulligan, who first discussed the idea as far back as It had a bigger name and a bigger drive. But, apart from all the loving and laughter, the organisers hope to use the event to raise awareness of LGBT issues that still persist in Ireland.
Those statistics are disappointing but it would be remiss to not acknowledge that Ireland has come an awfully long way with regards to gay issues since decriminalisation 20 years ago. This is, after all, the first major gay event outside a big city in the country. From a societal point of view, this weekend is a very big deal.
Twenty years ago the idea that something like this could happen in a small town in Ireland would have been met with disbelief. I take my hat off to the town of Lisdoonvarna. McGuinness, who has worked in the hotel trade as well as event management and choreography, says there will be something for everyone at the event, but for him there are a few acts that stand out. Also what we have planned for the lighting of the Hydro Hotel will light up the sky.

Culture Trip stands with Black Lives Matter. Far from the world of Tinder, the lively Dublin nightlife scene, and almost any other modern-day take on romance you care to mention, Lisdoonvarna hosts an annual autumn festival aimed, traditionally, at helping lonely rural farmers to meet a match from outside their immediate area. Despite being viewed as something of a beloved national joke, however, Lisdoonvarna has modernised substantially in recent years.
